Dynamics of the workshop

Objectives of the workshop

    1. Create a network on biocultural restoration
    1. Brainstorm on a suitable experimental design for biocultural approaches
    1. Set the basic principles for the BioRestNet
    1. Draft of a white paper on biocultural restoration

Basic dynamics

  • Presentations
    • 2 per period (morning and afternoon)
  • Breakout groups
    • three groups of 6
    • Facilitator and secretary roles
  • Sharing thoughts
    • One presenter per group

All oriented by a theme and questions

Day 1 - Biocultural Approaches - morning

Today’s question:
How to make sense of indigenous and local knowledge when assessing landscapes?

  • How to incorporate ILK of the landscape and biodiversity?
  • How to conciliate ILK with “hard-science”?
  • What are the scientific frontiers of including ILK into restoration?

Day 1 - Biocultural Approaches - afternoon

Afternoon’s question:
How would you justify the adoption of biocultural apporach as a novel perspective to restoration?

Day 2 - Productive Restoration

Today’s question:
How to design and promote productive restoration based on ILK

  • What is the role of Agroforestry on restoration?
  • How to pursue sustainable grazing system with restoration?

Day 3 - Landscape Perspectives

Today’s question:
How to design landscape-scale assessments of biocultural restoration

  • What are the tools and lessons from landscape ecology for biocutlrual restoration?
  • How to describe and analyse landscapes using both ecology and social sciences?
  • Can we have basic recommendations for landscape-scale studies on biocultural restoration?

Day 4 - Visit to the Maasai Mara

Day 4 - Visit to the Maasai Mara

During the field trip

  • We will visit communities and see a gradient of vegetation and anthropogenic pressures
  • There will be chance to buy handicrafts
  • Lunch and refreshments will be provided
